Taking Measurements

If you already have countertops in your kitchen, bathrooms, bar, etc. and want to replace them with granite, it will be very easy to create your countertop drawings using the methods below.

Measuring an island :

Use a tape measurer to measure the dimensions of your island to the nearest 1/8 of an inch. On corners where the countertop extends over 8” from the cabinet bases, you can radius your corners 3”. On corners where the cabinets are only an inch and a half overhang from your cabinet bases, use an 1 ½” radius.

Example island drawing:

The X marks represent which edges are polished with your specified edge treatment. Radius edges are marked in their locations. Dimensions are also noted.

Measuring a countertop against a wall :

You will need to measure from wall to wall when measuring for your countertops. If a backsplash or sidesplash exists, use the tape measurer on the top of the splashes. Standard depth for most kitchen countertops are 25 ½”. Your cabinets will usually be 24” and normally, there is a 1 ½” overhang. Try to get the measurements as close as possible. This will avoid having to cut into your drywall or using the backsplashes to cover up measurement mistakes. Be sure to mark where there is a wall where a splash will be needed, where a refrigerator exists, and where your stove exists. Different edge treatments will be used in these locations compared to your edge of choice. (flat polish vs. your custom polish)

Sink centers are usually market from the right side of the countertop to the left. In the event it’s difficult to measure full length, you can base it off a different reference point. If you have an offset bowl, be sure to measure your sink center as the sum of the width of the two bowls divided in half.

In pieces greater than 96”, please mark a preferable location of your seam. This is necessary since our slabs only go up to 96” width and about 60” height.

Measuring a wall locked vanity :

Slight variation exists between the width of the front of the vanity and the width of the back of the vanity. Both these measurements should be taken.
